SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
During their exchange program in South Africa, international students are expected to involve in a community project, either helping out with children at an orphanage, with a
literacy program or with an environmental project, depending on what is available. This is not compulsory, but students who have been involved with volunteering have found it to be an immensely rewarding cultural experience. Students live with welcoming South African host families in the greater Cape Town area or other locations. The local coordinator takes international students on a group outing once a month, and students can choose between doing an extreme sport outing (sandboarding, kloofing and surf lessons), a sight-seeing tour, so they can get to see popular tourist sites, or a unique experience such as visiting a township, hiking on Table Mountain or doing voluntary work.
SCHOOL SYSTEM
A typical school day normally begins at about 7.50am and continues until 2:30pm after which time a sport is usually played. All students must be involved in school sports or other extracurricular activities. A number of schools are single sex schools (boys or girls only). School uniforms are compulsory. Students need to participate fully in school, and are expected to participate academically, by taking exams and test throughout the year, as well as in school sports activities and cultural events (e.g. school theatre etc.). Students from ages 12 to 18 attend secondary high school, from grades 8 through 12.
Compulsory subjects are English and Afrikaans. Students may choose other subjects from Mathematics, Science, Biology, Geography, History, Art, Accountancy, Business Economics, Home Economics, and Wood/Metal Work. Some schools offer Foreign Languages (French, German or an African language), Music, and Technical subjects.
The academic year runs from January to December. Graduation is not possible.
