SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
Students are hosted by American volunteer families and attend classes in local public High Schools. Our host families are middle-class families, willing to share their lives, hearts and home with a foreign high school student. Students have the chance to take part in family activities and are encouraged to make the most of their opportunity to learn about everyday life in America from their host family. Regional coordinators work together with local representatives to place students with families and then support the students as they acclimate to American culture.. Extracurricular activities are offered by all American high schools: sports and music are really popular but photography or volunteer work may also be proposed. These activities are a good way to integrate and to make friends among American students. Participation in school sports is not guaranteed. Athletic availability and eligibility is determined by local school districts and state high school athletic associations. Students should check with the athletic director at their high school regarding eligibility if they would like to participate in a sport. Most communities offer athletics apart from school, and students are encouraged to participate if they are interested.
SCHOOL SYSTEM
The curriculum is not standardized and students may choose from a variety of subjects: English (grammar, writing, literature, theatre etc…), Physical Education including Health courses, Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences including US History and US
Government, Business, Psychology, Philosophy, Industrial Design, Economy, etc.
The student is responsible for all school fees during his/her high school program in the USA: registration, books, lockers, laboratories, gym/physical education, yearbook, class ring, letter jacket, student activities, extracurricular etc. The school year runs from August to June. Graduation may be possible.
