SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
Schools are located in Greater São Paulo, in residential areas, but not in the big city itself. São Paulo is the major industrial and economic powerhouse of the Brazilian economy, a vibrant and dynamic city. São José dos Campos was rated one of the top 25 Brazilian cities for quality of life. With its high per capita income, long life expectancy and high level of infrastructure, São José dos Campos is a safe and secure city that offers a wide variety of stores and services. International students will make the most of their stay in Brazil to discover this geographically and culturally diverse and colorful country. They will be placed in a local private school (they will have to wear a uniform) and in a Brazilian host family. Students will attend the same classes as their peers. School usually goes from 7:30am to 1.30pm or from 1pm to 7pm. Students enjoy their free-time by taking Portuguese courses or practicing sports in various clubs. Brazilian high schools do offer extracurricular activities, but exchange students can also enroll in local clubs
SCHOOL SYSTEM
Education in Brazil is divided into 2 tiers: Primary education (nine grades, from age 6 to 14) and Secondary education (three grades, from age 14 to 17/18). After secondary school, students can enroll into higher education. Subjects offered by Brazilian high schools are: Portuguese Language and Literature, Foreign Language, History, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Biology, Arts and Physical Education. Students do not have a choice of subjects. Classes are conducted in Portuguese. Brazilian high schools accept students with the understanding that language skills may present academic challenges in the beginning. Students can take Portuguese language courses, the language immersion courses must be taken for three months (included in the price). Graduation is not possible. The opportunity to attend a short term homestay and school integration program in Brazil is offered to international students. (8 weeks)
