SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

International students are hosted by a volunteer Japanese host family and attend classes in the local high school. Students can be placed anywhere in Japan according to availability. To live with a generous and open-minded family is a great adventure for students, who will later keep in touch with all the Japanese friends they have made. This is an amazing way to learn about Japanese culture and make the most of it. Each participant will have to prove adaptable, as this culture is very different from any other. Participants will have to show politeness, kindness, interest, and curiosity. Being highly motivated is essential for those in this program. Teachers assist students with their integration process, because they believe that international students contribute to the development of the school’s cultural life.

SCHOOL SYSTEM

Schools expect international students to maintain high academic standards and actively participate in school life. International students also participate in a local language club, exchanging their own culture and language with the Japanese. Students wear a school

Uniform. The Japanese educational system can be outlined as follows: six years in primary school, three years in junior high school, three years in senior high school and four years at university. High school is called “Kotogakko”, and 94% of students who have successfully passed the previous period called “Chugakko” study through to higher education. Subjects are taught over a period of three years. There are two kinds of

programs: the general program (language, mathematics, etc…) and the professional program (Industry, Trade, etc…). The normal school year is divided into three terms: March to July, September to December, and January to March. International students can choose to do their program either from March to December or from August to July. Graduation is not possible. Within this program, schools are limited to issuing a Certificate of Attendance and the list of classes attended. Grade transcript cannot be issued
