SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

The school is a Christian co-educational boarding school under Protestant management, which was founded in 1611 and welcomes 200 students. The school is located in Cavan, a small town in the north of Ireland, close to the border of Northern Ireland. Extra activities, clubs, indoor and outdoor sports, are organized by the school. The local coordinator take care of the international students placed in this school and provide them with a carefully selected host family.

SCHOOL SYSTEM

A typical secondary school consists of 1st to 3rd years, the usually optional 4th year or Transition Year (‹ 16 Y.O.), the 5th year (16/17 Y.O.) and 6th year (› 17 Y.O.). The Junior Cycle builds on the education received at primary level and ends with the Junior Certificate Examination. The Junior Certificate Examination is taken after three years of study and not before 14 years of age. The Transition Year is a one-year informal course taken by an increasing number of students. The school models the curriculum according to local needs and is often focused on work placement and related projects. The Senior Cycle builds on the junior cycle and culminates with the Leaving Certificate Examination. The Leaving Certificate Examination is taken after at least two years of study following the Junior Certificate Examination. International Students must take a minimum of five subjects (most students take 7 or even more) including

the two core subjects of English and Mathematics. Students can then choose their other subjects from a broad range including Arts, Languages, Science and other applied subjects (e.g. Mechanical Drawing, Woodwork etc.). At the end of the senior cycle the Leaving Certificate Examination is taken. Students normally sit for this examination at eighteen years of age. The Leaving Certificate Examination is internationally recognised as being the equivalent of the British A Level Examination and the International Baccalaureate Examination and allows access to universities in the UK, the USA and all over Europe.
