SCHOOL SYSTEM

A typical secondary school consists of 1st to 3rd years, the usually optional 4th year or Transition Year (‹ 16 Y.O.), the 5th year (16/17 Y.O.) and 6th year (› 17 Y.O.). Note that Brookfield College only welcomes students in 5th and 6th Year. 95 per cent of all Brookfield College students who sat the Leaving Certificate are now in third-level education, in institutions across Ireland, the North and the UK. Students are monitored continuously and are required to sit regular assessments. The Senior Cycle builds on the junior cycle and culminates with the Leaving Certificate Examination. International Students must take a minimum of five subjects (most students take 7 or even more) including the two core subjects of English and Mathematics. Students can then choose their other subjects from a broad range including Arts, Languages, Science and other applied subjects (e.g. Mechanical Drawing, Woodwork etc.). At the end of the senior cycle the Leaving Certificate Examination is taken. Students normally sit for this examination at eighteen years of age. The Leaving Certificate Examination is internationally recognised as being the equivalent of the British A Level Examination and the International Baccalaureate Examination and allows access to universities in the UK, the USA and all over Europe. Graduation is possible.
