HOMESTAY EXPERIENCE

Within this program, students are completely immersed in the Portuguese language and do not have opportunities to speak their own mother tongue: this allows a quick improvement of the language skills. Students get the unique opportunity to discover a new way of life and a new culture first hand, not like a tourist! The homestay program is the most affordable language travel! This program is ideally suited to mature and independent students, eager to meet new people from abroad and with enough language proficiency to communicate with host family members. The pure homestay program is a true cultural exchange. Schools are located in Greater São Paulo, in residential areas, but not in the big city itself. São Paulo is the major industrial and economic powerhouse of the Brazilian economy, a vibrant and dynamic city. São José dos Campos was rated one of the top 25 Brazilian cities for quality of life. With its high per capita income, long life expectancy and high level of infrastructure, São José dos Campos is a safe and secure city that offers a wide variety of stores and services.

SCHOOL SYSTEM

International students go to school with their host siblings or children of the neighborhood. They attend regular classes with their classmates and participate in all school activities. This is a cultural program, not an academic program. Students should not expect to receive any grade transcript. Education in Brazil is divided into 2 tiers: Primary education (nine grades, from age 6 to 14) and Secondary education (three grades, from age 14 to 17/18). After secondary school, students can enroll into higher education. Subjects offered by Brazilian high schools are: Portuguese Language and Literature, Foreign Language, History, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Arts and P.E.. Students do not have a choice of subjects. Classes are conducted in Portuguese. The school year runs from February to mid December, with winter holidays in July and summer holidays in January.
